The Consumer Information Indicator flags a special condition about one consumer on the account, such as a bankruptcy filing or discharge, a personal receivership, a reaffirmed debt, a lease assumption, or a consumer you can’t locate.

| D | Chapter 13 petition filed | The consumer filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy. | — |
| E | Chapter 7 discharged | The consumer’s debts were discharged in Chapter 7. | Replaces A. |

| Q | Remove bankruptcy or receivership | Removes a bankruptcy (A–H) or personal receivership (1A) indicator. | Also use when a bankruptcy was dismissed, withdrawn, closed or terminated without a discharge. Not a default value: leave the field blank when nothing applies. |
| R | Chapter 7 reaffirmation | The consumer reaffirmed this debt in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, agreeing to keep paying it. | — |
| V | Chapter 7 reaffirmation rescinded | The consumer canceled a Chapter 7 reaffirmation. | — |
| 2A | Lease assumption | The consumer took over a lease. | — |
| S | Remove reaffirmation or lease assumption | Removes R, V or 2A (and the retired codes W, X and Y). | Not a default value: leave the field blank when nothing applies. |
| T | Cannot locate consumer | You can’t find the consumer. | — |
| U | Consumer located | Removes T after you find the consumer. | Not a default value: leave the field blank when nothing applies. |
You can report the indicator every month while it applies, or report it once and leave the field blank afterward. Either way, the bureaus keep it until you report a different indicator or a removal code. In this example, a consumer files Chapter 13 in March and completes the plan, so you report the discharge in June.
| Reporting month | Report every month | Report once | On the consumer’s file |
|---|---|---|---|
| March | D | D | D |
| April | D | Blank | D |
| May | D | Blank | D |
| June | H | H | H (replaces D) |
If a bankruptcy indicator was reported in error, or the case was dismissed without a discharge, report Q to remove it. For example, if you reported D in March and the court dismissed the case in May, report Q in May.
Bankruptcy filings also affect the Date of First Delinquency. See Exhibit 9 — Date of First Delinquency.
