The Compliance Condition Code tells the credit bureaus about a condition the law requires you to report: the consumer asked you to close the account, or the consumer has disputed the account directly with you under the FCRA, FDCPA or Fair Credit Billing Act.
| Code | Description | What it means | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blank | No new code | Nothing new to report this month. Any code already on file stays in place. | The normal value when no compliance condition applies or nothing has changed. |
| XA | Closed at consumer’s request | The consumer asked you to close the account. | Also report the Date Closed: the date the account was closed to new purchases or use. |
| XB | Direct dispute in progress | The consumer disputed the account directly with you, not through a credit bureau, and you are still investigating. Covers FCRA direct disputes and FDCPA disputes. | Replace it once your investigation is finished, with XR or a completion code such as XC or XH. For FDCPA disputes, collection agencies and debt buyers may keep XB on the account as long as their policies allow. |
| XC | Direct dispute resolved — consumer disagrees | You finished investigating an FCRA direct dispute, but the consumer does not accept the result. | Use after XB when the consumer still disagrees. |
| XD | Closed at consumer’s request + direct dispute in progress | Both XA and XB apply at the same time. | Also report the Date Closed: the date the account was closed to new purchases or use. When the investigation ends, change to XA or XE. |
| XE | Closed at consumer’s request + dispute resolved, consumer disagrees | Both XA and XC (FCRA direct dispute) or XA and XG (FCBA dispute) apply. | Also report the Date Closed: the date the account was closed to new purchases or use. |
| XF | Billing dispute in progress (FCBA) | The consumer disputed a billing error under the Fair Credit Billing Act, and you are still investigating. | Replace it once your investigation is finished, with XR or a completion code such as XG or XH. |
| XG | Billing dispute resolved — consumer disagrees | You finished investigating an FCBA dispute, but the consumer does not accept the result. | Use after XF when the consumer still disagrees. |
| XH | Dispute resolved | The account was in dispute and your investigation is complete. | Works for FCRA direct, FDCPA and FCBA disputes. |
| XJ | Closed at consumer’s request + billing dispute in progress | Both XA and XF apply at the same time. | Also report the Date Closed: the date the account was closed to new purchases or use. When the investigation ends, change to XA or XE. |
| XR | Remove code | Removes the most recently reported Compliance Condition Code from the account. | Use only to remove a code. It is not a default value: leave the field blank when nothing applies. |
Find the stage of the dispute and the law it falls under.
| Dispute stage | FCRA direct dispute | FDCPA dispute | FCBA billing dispute |
|---|---|---|---|
| Investigation in progress | XB | XB | XF |
| Investigation finished, consumer disagrees | XC | XBNo separate code. XB may stay on as long as your policy allows. | XG |
| Investigation finished | XH | XH | XH |
If the consumer also asked you to close the account, use the combination codes:
| Dispute stage | FCRA direct dispute | FCBA billing dispute |
|---|---|---|
| No dispute | XA | XA |
| Investigation in progress | XD | XJ |
| Investigation finished, consumer disagrees | XE | XE |
| Investigation finished | XA | XA |
You can report a code every month while it applies, or report it once and leave the field blank afterward. Either way, the bureaus keep the code until you report a different one or XR. In this example, a consumer closes their credit card in June, disputes the balance in August, and accepts your findings in October.
| Reporting month | Report every month | Report once | On the consumer’s file |
|---|---|---|---|
| June | XA | XA | XA |
| July | XA | Blank | XA |
| August | XD | XD | XD (replaces XA) |
| September | XD | Blank | XD |
| October | XA | XA | XA (replaces XD) |
